Growing an Herb Garden
If you like cooking with herbs then
you probably already know that you’ll get the best tasting results if you use
fresh herbs.
But, buying fresh herbs all the time can be expensive – especially if you only
need to use a little in the meal you prepare.
The easiest way to solve this problem
is to start up your own herb garden in your yard or even in a sunny spot in your
kitchen. The great thing about herb plants is that you can grow them in pots,
you can simply put them in a garden border or you can give them a special area –
it really is up to you.
This doesn’t have to take up a lot of
time and effort – and you’ll get a fairly constant supply of your favorite herbs
without having to go to the store to find them. So, how do you go about planting
herbs? Let’s take a look at the basics.
1.
Find the right place…..herbs generally like sun and
they like soil that is well drained so you’ll need to find this kind of spot for
your herb plants. However, one or two herbs do like a bit of shade so you may
need a special spot for them.
2.
Choose your herbs to grow….the key here is to choose
the herbs you like and will use regularly. Most herbs are real easy to grow –
especially mint, parsley, thyme, dill, rosemary, sage, oregano, tarragon, chives
and basil.
3.
Sort out your annuals from your perennials…..you’ll
probably find it easier growing herbs if you organize them by the way their
life-span works. So, keep your annuals together and your perennials together.
4.
Look after them…..don’t think that your herb garden
will thrive on its own necessarily. Make sure you feed and water it to give it
the best chance.
5.
Be brutal…..some herbs – such as mint for example –
don’t need much help at all to completely over-run your yard. One way round this
is to pot it or simply to be stern and keep it under control with regular
pruning!
6.
Reap the rewards…..there’s no better feeling than
pinching off some freshly-grown herbs to use while you are cooking a meal. But,
all too often we grow more than we can use. Harvesting herbs is not difficult –
you can freeze some of them or dry them so you have a constant supply all year
round.
So, what are you waiting for – get
planning and get ready to enjoy the herby fruits of your labors!
